Dana’s Story
I’ve been in recovery from PTSD for over 15 years, and along the way, I’ve come to understand just how deeply the body holds onto stress. As a sensitive child, I seemed to evacuate my body early on in life and lived in my head instead. Stress would often show up for me as illness—when you can’t hear the whispers, the body starts to scream. And mine did, over and over again. My body was raising the alarm, though at the time, no-one really knew how to respond.
After a traumatic car accident at 20 years old, my body’s screams became impossible to ignore. The physical injuries left me in pain and exhausted, my life became small and emotionally, I felt numb. Talk therapies helped me make sense of what I was experiencing on a cognitive level, but it didn’t reach the part of me that was still stuck in survival mode.
It wasn’t until I discovered Core Energetics that I found a way to truly heal. By learning the language of my body and communicating back through movement, I was able to show my nervous system that those threats were in the past. For the first time, my body understood it no longer had to carry the weight of that stress.
